Journal Exchange

Journal entries are to be written each week of the field experience. In order for the reflective process to be valuable these must be written within a short time of each week's experience. Thus, you should send your journal entry attachment by 9 PM Wednesday/Thursday to myself (cushmajr@buffalostate.edu) and your peer listed in the chart below. Journal entries should be limited to no more than 2 pages (MS Word© document, double spaced, font size 12). A copy of the journal should be sent to me at the same time you mail it to your peer (Remove the check next to "Do not disclose recepients" on ANGEL so I can see you have mailed it to both of us). Below is a schedule for the semester.
General Guidelines

Please name your Word © journal files as follows:

FirstnameLastinitial_week#.doc eg., StaceyM_1.doc or RyanL_6.doc

Please put your name and the dates of the field experience on your journal entry.
If you don't have MS Word ©, email your journal in the body of the email message.

Every journal must address the following (At times there may be a specific task to write about in your journal, but in general the following should be considered):

<> What did you learn about teaching through today's experience? This should be primarily about yourself, but may include students as well. For example, what would you like to have been able to make clearer?
<>Why do you think that things weren't as clear as you'd hoped?
<>Did you connect the material to students' prior knowledge/experience or to other content areas?
<>Did you engage the students actively or were you primarily lecturing?
<>How could you have changed the lesson to make it more engaging?
<>How did you have to modify your plans and how would you modify them for next time?

<>You might also include reflections on these topics:

<>What questions do you have? Were there questions that you wanted to be able to answer more completely but weren't sure how?

<> What questions did you ask to prompt their thinking? (and how did they respond)

<> What interesting questions did you respond to? (be specific, i.e., include the problem setting and other details)

<> What interesting misconceptions did the students have? (and what did you do to clarify them?)
