MED 308
Assignment #3
- The handout from
class is a lesson
from the Core-Plus mathematics curriculum (more details on Core-Plus
will be
discussed later). Read the introduction and complete the Think
About
This
Situation, then complete Investigation 1, #1-6. In addition, read
carefully the
Checkpoint, and the On Your Own. Use graph paper when drawing
graphs.
This
lesson does not expect students to solve equations algebraically.
You
should be
using the table and graph to find solutions. As you work on the
problems,
consider what the learning objectives might be, and how these are
achieved.
What do you think the students are learning and what prerequisite
knowledge did
they need to have to complete Lesson 4? Lastly, this lesson
reflects
many parts
of a good lesson plan. Try to note what these are.
2. Develop a lesson that you would use
in
a grade 10 (Geometry) classroom based on section 8.3 on similar
polygons. You might imagine the following scenario. Suppose you teach
in a district that uses this textbook and the department
guidelines
suggest that the section be taught over two days. In addition, you are
going to be observed by your assistant principal the first day and have
to submit a formal lesson plan prior to the observation.
Use the lesson plan outline
and
the associated pages you were given this week as resources. The
students should
be assigned homework each day. The lesson plan
should be for a single
45-minute class. The second day's lesson can be summarized in a
paragraph or two
(not a
second lesson plan), but you should include the assignment for that day
as well. Any
pages or materials that you refer to need to be developed for
the
lesson should be included with the plan. For purposes of this lesson we
will
assume that computers are not available, but you have
access to
whatever
manipulatives or other materials that you need including graphing
calculators.
You should use the new state standards (NYS Core Curriculum Pre-K to
Grade 12
link on course
webpage) when writing your objectives despite the Math A
example
in #4 on the outline. Lastly, the lesson should conform to the vision
of
mathematics teaching that we have been discussing and experiencing
throughout
the semester.
Also, bring your NCTM and AMTNYS membership emails
to hand in, if you haven't done so already.
