Assignment #11

  1. Read the article Using Concept Maps to Link Mathematical Ideas. While reading, keep a few notes on the "big ideas" they are discussing as well as specific questions regarding the process or purpose of concept mapping. Try some of the empty concept maps to see how you do with them. Also, consider what your own concept map might look like for ratio, proportion, and percent and how it compares with the ones presented.  Be prepared to share your concept map with the class.

  1.  Once again, go to nctm.org and log in. Again, under the heading NCTM Standards you will see Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (with the logo). Click on more.

a.      Read Chapter 6, p. 256 – 285 (the pages are found in the left margin). These pages describe the process standards and expectations for Grades 6-8 and illustrate the standards through discussions of many mathematical problems.

b.     Again, as you read the sections, take time to work on problems with pencil and paper in hand. Keep in mind that the problems represent the vision of where we want our 6-8 grade students to be. Select three problems that you find particularly interesting and be prepared to discuss/present these on Tuesday.

  1. Complete the Interpreting Graphs activity that we began in class. As you are working on the various questions and tasks, consider what the learning objectives for this activity might be and who the appropriate audience might be. You might consider whether this is an activity you would use with your students and why you feel that way. Keep in mind the discussions we are having about concept development. Write one to two pages documenting your thoughts in regards to these issues.
