MED 683
Assignment #5
Due Tuesday July 18
1. There have been discussions for many years on an approach to
teaching mathematics called inquiry-based learning or IBL. A number
of colleges and universities have adopted the approach in one or
more courses that their mathematics majors are required to take.
Please read the short description offered on the link below and take
a look at their "Good Starter
Activities" document. We'll discuss a few of these on Tuesday.
2. Culminating Work: I would like to wrap up the course by having
you create classroom materials that will hopefully be of interest to
your students as you are teaching a particular topic. This could
take on a couple of forms. You might develop a series of lessons
around a particular theme or topic that employs a problem-based
approach. Or perhaps you'd like to pursue the development of
three-act tasks that will allow for your students (or future
students) to engage in problem generation on a periodic basis next
year. I will work with you individually on this and support your
work as needed. The goal should be 3 to 5 lessons depending on the
task you are selecting. I would like to get this from you by Monday
evening 7/24 so I can grade them and enter the course grades within
the designated window. For Tuesday 7/18, please have a draft of your
ideas and initial problems or tasks selected so you can share them
with each other and gather feedback. We'll spend much of the time in
the last class meetings working in this so I have the opportunity to
provide feedback and support.
3. Lastly, I'd like to complete one more set of Exeter problems. These are a mix
from Math 1 and Math 2.
