MED 683
Assignment #3
Due Tuesday 7/11
1. Continue your exploration of Exeter's problem-based approach to
teaching mathematics by completing problem
set #2. These primarily deal with the general from of a linear
equation: ax + by = c, and further your thinking about parametric
equations.
2. Read the University of Montana's, The Mathematics Enthusiast article by Frank
Lester on problem solving. Professor Lester is one of a
handful of renown scholars of problem solving in school mathematics.
3. Watch the video
by Jo Boaler on common core mathematics. We'll watch several
of Jo's videos and utilize her materials in our next couple of
classes.
4. Read the short chapter
on Problem Solving taken from a math textbook. Write 3-5 pages
discussing what you see as the purpose of this chapter and its value
in growing students' problem solving abilities in light of Lester's
reflections on the role of problem solving in mathematics classrooms
and other work & readings we've done in the course. Please
include references in your writing and if you quote sources, follow
the APA
format. Lastly, keep in mind SMP #1.
5. Over the next couple of weeks we'll look at curricula that are
problem-based but very different from Exeter's materials. To begin
to get a sense of the approach of one
middle school curriculum, please complete problems 1.3 part a
only, 2.1part a and b, 2.3 part a.1 only, parts b and c.
