Assignment #4
1. Revisit Figure 1-2 from
Michael Kibby's chapter we read for Assignment 1. Note the list of
terms on the left side of the table. This list reflects the
components of research reports from both quantitative and
qualitative research domains. For next week, read Jo Boaler's 2017 follow up
qualitative study on her 2002 report on two schools in England
that approached mathematics teaching and learning from very
different perspectives. Briefly (1 to 3 sentences) summarize each
part of her report as you are able to identify them in her writing.
2. Read the portion of the chapter that introduces Qualitative Research
that was distributed in class. Keep in mind Boaler's work as you
read and consider the five features of qualitative research and how
she has responded to these in her work. Consider aspects of the 10
common questions as they relate to your thoughts on her research and
findings. No written response is required but maintain good notes.
3. Lastly, we'll continue exploring research that broadens our
perspective on the nature of educational research on teaching and
learning mathematics by reading a review of research
(see Kibby p.28 Genre VII) related to representations and students
with learning difficulties in mathematics. As you read, consider the
key components of a research report and how a review of research
differs slightly, but maintains the overall structure. No write-up
of this is required.
