MED 308/300
Assignment 5
Due Thursday, September 27
Note: MED 300 will meet as planned next week, but on Tuesday there is no MED 308 class

1. Reminder: Please submit your journal by Sunday at the latest. It may be that you have it written by Thursday or Friday night and feel free to submit it then. You should be trying to capture particular moments of insight on student's learning or your own thinking as a teacher entering the profession.

2. Complete the Exeter Problems from Math 2, pg 1, #1-3.

3. Complete the next set of Exeter problems that the Cheektowaga geometry students are working on- Problem Sets 4-6 and the homework problems that are included with those.

4. Begin writing Task 1: Context for Learning (see email for template). Complete it to the greatest extent possible. Email your completed task to me.

5. The Math Assessment Project website offers a number of resources for teaching mathematics. We've briefly looked at the TRU framework from this site (and will revisit that soon) but the site also provides many well-developed lessons for classroom use across grades 6-12.  The MARS classroom challenges are well aligned with the discussions we've been having and the approach to teaching we're seeing in the classroom with the Illustrative Mathematics units. Please read an excerpt from the teaching guide that discusses the envisioned classroom environment for MARS lessons in terms of the teacher's role and the students' role and then read through the entire lesson that we've been working on in class on quadratics.

6. You may have noticed references to the "Five Practices" in the IM curriculum or in our discussions with Katie and Karen. Please read chapter 1 that you received from Smith & Stein's work that introduces the five practices for orchestrating effective classroom discussions.
