Field Experience (3 credits 1/3)
Provides classroom and field experience designed to help the student make an informed decision about a career in secondary or middle school mathematics teaching. Students are introduced to current school mathematics practices; related mathematics teaching periodicals and policy documents; and affective and societal issues surrounding teaching. Emphasis on reflective observation of teaching and learning, and the classroom, school, and community contexts in which they occur.
Uses Of Technology In The Teaching of Mathematics (3 credits)
Prerequisite: (upper division status or permission of instructor).
Equipment and software available for use in the mathematics classroom. Effective use of technology in exploration and development of concepts, problem solving, development of lessons, and assessment of educational potential of current and new technologies. Production and evaluation of projects for use in the mathematics classroom
Field Experience: Methods

Teaching of Secondary School Mathematics (3

Corequisite: MED 308
Supervised field experience at the middle and/or high school level. Emphasis on classroom implementation of knowledge, understanding, and practice consistent with state and national mathematics teaching standards discussed in MED 308.
Methods In The Teaching of Secondary School Mathematics (3 credits)
Corequisite: MED 300
Prerequisite for 0721: Minimum of 30 hours of MAT courses completed with a GPA of 2.5. Minimum of 9 hours of Professional courses including MED 200 with a GPA of 2.5. Permission of instructor.
An introduction to the theory and practice of classroom teaching for the prospective secondary mathematics teacher. Experience in classroom discipline, planning for instructor, curricuilar issues, evaluation and testing, and special learning techniques. Includes lectures, peer presentation, construction and critique of lesson plans, use of media, and research of teaching strategies.
Teaching Mathematics in the Middle School
Prerequisite: Must be enroled in 0524 or 0721 or 7055 with a minimum of 24 hours of MAT courses with a GPA of 2.5. Minimum of 6 hours of Professional courses with a GPA of 2.5. At least 75 hours completed. Permission of instructor.
This course will prepare students to teach mathematics in grades
5-9. Students
will examine the techniques and models used to teach mathematics
at the middle
school level in the context of current research on how children
learn
mathematics.
Learning and Teaching Problem Solving (3 credits)
Prerequisiste: MAT 162 or MAT 127 MAT 270 and at least junior standing.
An introduction to the basic techniques of problem solving, creative problem solving, the methods of Polya, Schoenfeld, and others, with applications to the areas of algebra, geometry, analysis, and recreational mathematics. The course also considers strategies of teaching problem solving, as well as research in this area.

Student Teaching of Mathematics in the
Lower Middle Grades.
same as MED 407
This course will prepare our student for teaching mathematics in grades 5-9. This course will also qualify our students for extended certification from grades 8-12 to 5-12 and from grades 1-6 to 1-8. The addition of the course will also address the new certification requirements proposed by the NYS Department of Education.
Student Teaching of Mathematics in Junior High/Middle School (6 credits)
Prerequisite for 0721: Completion of MED/SED 308 with a grade of "C" or better; completion of MED 300 with a minimum grade of C; GPA of 2.5 in all Mathematics courses applied towards the major; all professional courses completed with a GPA of 2.5; senior status; permission of instructor.
Prerequisite for 0524: Completion of MED/SED 309 with grade of "C" or better, GPA of 2.5 in all Mathematics courses applied towards the major; all professional courses completed with a GPA of 2.5, senior status, permission of instructor.
Early secondary school classroom laboratory experiences; goal of early secondary math education; psychological influences ; teaching models; testing and evaluation techniques; total involvement in early secondary school activities-practicum.
Student Teaching of Mathematics in Senior High School (6 credits)
Prerequisite for 0721: Completion of MED/SED 308 with a grade of "C" or better;completion of MED 300 with a minimum grade of C; GPA of 2.5 in all Mathematics courses applied towards the major; all professional courses completed with a GPA of 2.5; senior status; permission of instructor.
