Students’ Thinking During the Lesson

Percentage of lessons that included teacher-
presented and student-generated
alternative solution methods

The Incidence of Alternative Solution Methods in the Lessons

We also were interested in the frequency with which students were exposed to alternative solution methods. We distinguished two types of alternative solution methods: those presented by the teacher, and those generated by the students.

As shown on the graph, 40 percent of Japanese lessons contained student-generated alternative solution methods, a percentage more than twice as high as that found in Germany and the US. The incidence of teacher-presented alternative solution methods did not differ significantly across countries.
